Waukesha approved more Flock cameras in 2025, then voted to remove planned Flock funding in 2026

On September 15, 2026, Waukesha’s council voted 13–0, with two members absent, to remove $292,000 for the Flock program from its 2027–2031 capital plan. The executive capital budget listed $56,000 for 2027 and 2028, calling 2027 year 4 of a five-year Flock contract, plus 2029–2031 estimates in case of a new contract. A year earlier, the council approved a three-camera contract addition by consent. The 2026 vote appears in the city’s Legistar database; the city’s meeting page marked the minutes as not yet final when reviewed.

Milwaukee police say Flock queries are now supervisor-only, MPD stopped sharing its data and retention is seven days

Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s August 31, 2026 statement announced new limits on the Milwaukee Police Department’s Flock camera use. In a September 11, 2026 letter to Common Council members, the police chief wrote that only supervisors can query the plate-reader system and MPD no longer shares its data with other agencies, both effective September 1; that queries are limited to listed crime types and missing-person cases; and that data is kept seven days. The letter also says MPD supervisors can still use other agencies’ plate-reader feeds in 836 jurisdictions. These are administrative changes described by the mayor and the department; the revised operating procedure was still a draft, and no council-adopted rule is in the record.

Wisconsin’s 2025–26 plate-reader bills failed to pass without a listed hearing or vote

Wisconsin legislators introduced plate-reader bills in 2025 that took different approaches. AB 576 would have banned plate-reader use, with exceptions, and required warrants for police access to plate-reader and private security-camera data. AB 300 would have funded purchases through state grants; a related Senate bill, SB 299, has the same relating clause. The histories and committee records list no hearing or vote, and they record each bill as failing to pass under the session schedule in March 2026.
